Where AI automation actually pays for itself in modern operations
A short list of the automations that reliably return their build cost, and the ones that quietly become a maintenance burden.

Not every repetitive task deserves an automation. Some are cheap for a human and expensive for a machine to handle reliably.
Automations that reliably generate ROI
- Document extraction. Reading structured data from invoices, contracts and intake forms, with a human approving before write-back.
- Routing and triage. Deciding which queue an inbound request belongs in, and notifying the right operator instantly.
- Drafting inside a process. First-pass summaries and client updates that a person reviews and sends.
- Reconciliation. Comparing two systems (e.g. CRM vs Stripe vs accounting) and reporting discrepancies.
Automations to avoid
- Anything with a high cost of being subtly wrong and no review step.
- Anything that depends on fragile screen-scraping interfaces.
- Anything you cannot observe. If you cannot inspect the run log, you do not have an automation; you have a hope.
The golden test
If the automation fails silently, who notices and how quickly? If the answer is "a customer", add a human checkpoint or do not build it.
